During WW2 there was fierce fighting between Finnish and Russian forces all along the eastern border, including major battles around Ilomantsi. The legendary "Border General" Erkki Raappana conducted much of the fighting from his log cabin headquarters.

If you look carefully at the carvings on the furniture you'll find lots of interesting details, particularly wild animals, which were close to Erkki Raappana's heart.

Originally built by his troops to mark his 50th birthday, the house was rebuilt at Parppeinvaara in 1984. It features his personal weapons, war-time maps and charts and other artefacts.

The Border General´s Cabin can be visited during summer season from the beginning of May to the end of September.
