During WW2 there was fierce fighting between Finnish and Russian forces all along the eastern border, including major battles around Ilomantsi. The legendary "Border General" Erkki Raappana directed much of the fighting from his log cabin headquarters.

If you look carefully at the carvings on the furniture you'll find lots of interesting detail, particularly wild animals, which were close to Erkki Raappana's heart.

Originally built by his troops to mark his 50th birthday, it was rebuilt at Parppeinvaara in 1984. It features his personal weapons, war-time maps and charts, and other artefacts.
